Assignment 8 Kevin

A group task would be tabling at Ho Plaza for a philanthropy event coming up this April. We want people to come to this event so we are handing out flyers and promoting this event. This is a group task because it requires more than one member attending this task and an online display that showed who was tabling. There were many issues that came up during tabling that I didn’t see happening.
One issue was that there was poor communication in what was supposed to be done when tabling. Therefore, task uncertainty was very high which also made it difficult to transition between activities. The other person who was tabling did not know what to do either because no one explained it to him either. We found out later from watching other people table that we had to hand out flyers and recruit people actively to play in the volley ball tournament. The reason for such misunderstanding is the result of the display of what we were supposed to do. We didn’t receive a good display of how this activity should be run. Instead, the email just said we were tabling and didn’t give any straightforward description of where we are supposed to table. We were more concerned with finding where we were supposed to go rather than what we were supposed to do. If the display had listed a location, then tabling would have been easier. Another issue is that other group members did not complete their tasks before tabling, for example group members did not provide necessary material for tabling (flyers, banner, and food). The online display lacked a task application that would have showed who needed to do what job before tabling. This way all group members could see what needed to be done. A third issue we faced was the fact that some group members did not show up to tabling when they should have. This is due to the fact that some group members couldn’t find out what time we were tabling. The display failed to outline this; instead, it just listed the days without specific shifts. There was a lot of confusion as to who was supposed to have a shift.

  1. I've run into a lot of similar problems with coordinating and Ho Plaza tabling. I have also found that there usually ends up being a problem with communication about the last shift and making sure someone is there to get the supplies. Sometimes turnovers can be bad too, because people will sign up for shifts and then at the end of their time-slot they need to leave to get to class, but people are often late in relieving them. Plus tabling is always hard because people hate getting those fliers and the rejection is hard to deal with!

  2. It seems that there was a need for grounding communication between group members, since many people were unsure of what to do while tabling. Since communication was not effective, group members did not provide necessary materials for tabling, such as flyers or food. If individual tasks were more explicitly stated, and inter-group communication tried to reach a mutual understanding between all group members, then the group may have been more successful in promoting this philanthropy event.
