Assignment 4: Rachel Schoenau

How to manage a Facebook account!

Do you have friends and family that you would like to keep in better touch with? If so, Facebook serves as a simple and safe solution to fulfill numerous social and communication needs.

If it seems that Facebook isn’t better than simply picking up the phone or emailing, let me inform you of some the potential rewards that result from your Facebook investment. As Grudin states, the benefits you can reap from this collaboration software are not limited to simple more efficient communication; you will have reduced phonebills, quicker communication, improved relationships, a new social outlet for the shyer kind, and more.

Is Facebook for you? Well it fulfills the needs of our President Barack Obama, Michael Phelps, Alan Greenspan, and probably those of your child. At Facebook, we have noticed a significant network effect; Facebook improves as more and more users join! Join today to improve your life.

As we saw in Orlikowski’s experiment, people will not adopt a new technology if clear descriptions of how the features can be applied to their work are not provided. Instead of having you think of Facebook as just an email program or and new version of AIM, I will explain Facebook in a new frame of reference. Facebook serves as an interface to post pictures, such as those from your trip to France with the kids that you wanted to show Grandma. You can also join groups and find a plethora of others in the area who support your favorite band and find out when and where their next concert is. You can also write messages and post on others’ walls, and finally rekindle a friendship with your friend from high school who moved to Thailand! When it seems that Facebook takes just as long as emails do, you can check if your friends are online at the same time you are and Facebook chat and instant message! Facebook also allows you to create events and invite your friends, so if you don’t feel like doing snail mail or sending out a plain-looking email for your next cocktail party to friends, you can create a Facebook event, easily invite your friends and post pictures from past events.

So, it seems that Facebook could make your life easier but you’re unsure of how to use it. Simply register for an account on facebook.com using any email address. The next time you want to communicate with a long distance friend, post pictures from your trip, or invite friends to your birthday, just call our hotline and they will provide you with free explanation, just like a customized users manual at your beck and call.
